On July 20, 1969, as the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle descended toward the Moon, the guidance computer threw Alarm 1201. Then 1202. Over and over. An interrupt overload — too many tasks competing for the same processor. The ground team at Capstone looked at each other and made a call that would be repeated in textbooks for decades: "Keep descending."
The computer was not broken. It was shedding low-priority tasks to meet its hard deadline. It was doing exactly what it had been taught to do — prioritize what matters, release what does not, and hold the course.
I have spent forty-three years teaching in Medford, Massachusetts. I have sat through ice storms, power failures, and the slow erosion of community budgets. I know something about systems under pressure. And I know this: the most dangerous moment is never the crisis itself. It is the moment before, when we fail to decide what matters.
When the alarm sounded, both Armstrong and Aldrin could have aborted. The procedure allowed for it. But they trusted the machine's discipline enough to trust their own. In 1987, when the ice storm knocked out the heating at our school, we did not wait for the utility company. We sealed the doors, opened the gymnasium, and moved two hundred children into a space where bodies kept bodies warm. The fracture was not the cold — it was the question of whether we would act.
The AGC dropped non-essential processes so the landing could continue. In my own life, this has looked like letting the garden go fallow in November so I could finish the quilting block the Henderson child needed for Christmas. It has looked like canceling the choir's ambitious December program because the three younger members were overwhelmed and needed rest. I used to believe that caring for everything meant doing everything. The alarm taught me: caring for everything means knowing which thread, if pulled, unravails the whole cloth.
Capstone could see the numbers. But Armstrong was looking through a porthole at actual lunar terrain — boulders, shadows, a landing zone that had moved two miles from plan. He called the burn. He flew manual for ninety seconds. The computer was essential, but it was not sovereign. The human hand, reading the world in real time, made the final call.
Each morning I walk the Charles River trail from Medford to Cambridge. The marsh gives back what you bring to it — patience. The tidal flats hold their secrets only for those who wait. I carry a knitting basket because my grandmother's frame is still pinned to the porch, the patterns passed from hand to hand since 1938. Some evenings I sing with the choir — we hold the breath before the downbeat, three seconds of stillness that gathers the whole room.
These are not idle habits. They are drills. They teach the same discipline as Alarm 1201: what matters, hold. What can wait, release. Read the ground. Trust the hands.
